  1. Chinese communist politician, a member of the
  2. Politburo from 1985, and head of government
  3. from 1987. During the pro-democracy
  4. demonstrations 1989 he supported the massacre
  5. of students by Chinese troops and the
  6. subsequent executions of others. He favours
  7. maintaining firm central and party control
  8. over the economy, and seeks improved
  9. relations with the USSR. Li was born at
  10. Chengdu in Sichuan province, the son of the
  11. writer Li Shouxun (who took part in the
  12. Nanchang rising 1927 and was executed 1930),
  13. and was adopted by the communist leader Zhou
  14. Enlai. He studied at the communist
  15. headquarters of Yanan 1941-47 and trained as
  16. a hydroelectric engineer at the Moscow Power
  17. Institute from 1948. He was appointed
  18. minister of the electric power industry 1981,
  19. a vice premier 1983, and prime minister 1987.
  20. In 1989 he launched the crackdown on
  21. demonstrators in Beijing that led to the
  22. massacre is in Tiananmen Square.
